Before you start
Close all Office apps.
Sign in as an administrator on the PC.
Make a note of the current key (or last 5 characters) if you may need it later.
If this is a Microsoft account–linked license (consumer retail/365 style) removing keys manually is not recommended use the Account UI or Microsoft Support.
Step-by-step (recommended, uses ospp.vbs)
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
Press Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt → Run as administrator.
Change to the Office folder that contains ospp.vbs. Use one of these depending on your install:
For typical 64-bit Office on 64-bit Windows:
cd /d "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16"
For 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows:
cd /d "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16"
(If your Office folder is different (older installers), adjust the path; LTSC installs usually use the Office16 folder.)
Show the currently installed license(s) and the last 5 characters of the key:
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus
Look for the entry that shows the last five characters of the installed product key.
Uninstall (remove) the key you found. Replace XXXXX with the last 5 characters shown by /dstatus:
cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:XXXXX
Example:
cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:AB123
You should see a success message like “Product key uninstall successful.”
Confirm the key is removed:
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus
The previously listed product key should no longer appear.
(Optional) If you need to completely clear activation data or are switching to a different licensing model, follow official guidance or contact Microsoft support — removing files from ...Microsoft\Office\Licenses manually is advanced and can break activations. If you’re dealing with account-linked licenses, use the Office app File → Account → Switch License or sign out and sign back in with the correct account.
Notes & troubleshooting
If ospp.vbs is not found: check both Program Files paths, or search your PC for ospp.vbs. LTSC/volume installs normally include it. Microsoft Learn
Volume activation (KMS/MAK): KMS and MAK behave differently. Uninstalling a MAK with ospp.vbs /unpkey is valid; KMS-client keys may re-activate with the KMS host. For KMS/enterprise scenarios consult your IT or Microsoft Volume Licensing support. Microsoft Learn+1
If removal fails or activation issues persist: use Microsoft’s SaRA/uninstall tools or contact Microsoft Support. For stubborn cases a full uninstall + reinstall (or using official cleanup utilities) can resolve leftover activation artifacts. Microsoft Learn+1
